Madagascar is a country of dramatic contrasts, from the rice patties stretching out along the central plateau, to the humid rainforests of the western mountains, to the “spiny forest” desert of the southwest. Humans first arrived on the island 2000 years ago, sailing from Indonesia. Since that time, Polynesians, Africans, Arabs, Indians, and Europeans have come to the island, and today the people and culture are a rich mix of these influences and traditions. Malagasy and French are the official languages.
